Famed for her many adventures, Frances made her debut with this title over thirty years ago.In this first Frances book, the little badger adroitly delays her bedtime with requests for kisses and milk, and concerns over tigers and giants and things going bump in the night. Long a favorite for the gentle humor of its familiar going to bed ritual, Bedtime for Frances is at last available with the warmth of full color enriching Garth Williams’s original nuanced and touching art. ‘Here is the coziest, most beguiling bedtime story in many a day.’—Kirkus Reviews (pointer).

Customer Rating: Summary: Great story for kids! Comment: I think this was a darling story. My 6 year old son loved it. I can't get over all the reviewers that make such a huge deal about the spanking reference. Get a grip! Frances is obviously a secure child and was being manipulative in getting up. Her father was very gentle with her. I agree with the person that thinks that what the anti-spankers can't get over is the fact that you can be a kind, gentle parent and still give a spanking. If more parents were like Frances' father, maybe there'd be less manipulative, misbehaved children. It is good to teach children to go to bed and stay in bed. Not sure I would have given the piece of cake, but I think it showed dad's fun side. My son and I read this today. He's a very tough kid to get to bed and to stay in bed and we just read it, enjoyed it and you know what? I didn't say a single word to him, but he never got up tonight. :)
Customer Rating: Summary: Be cautious of the heavy handed naysayers Comment: I first purchased Bedtime for Frances in 1975. It was for my oldest child. Subsequently we read it to all 5 of our children and it became their favorite bedtime book.
Some reviewers are cautious to a fault about the give and take that goes on between Frances and the parent, her not going to bed, the threat of a spanking and the gloomy characters in her bedroom. Well apparently they have never had the real life process of raising a child and sharing the experiences.
Frances became a way of talking to them about the things that aren't there in the dark, behaving themselves and even sounds that go on during the night. The book also shows the comfort of Mother and Father sharing a snack and with enough authority to enforce the rules, even on the monsters of Frances imagination.
Three years ago I bought a new copy of Frances for each of my children to share with their children(the new one is in color.) My original is still here for use with Grandchildren when they sleep over.
This is an extremely innocuous story about a little Badger's struggle with settling down for a good sleep...perhaps the worry worts ought to buy a copy and let it settle them down too.
Customer Rating: Summary: great children's story Comment: I remember my mother reading Frances books to me when I was little, and I couldn't wait to read them to my daughter. The Frances books are wonderful children's stories.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Book! Comment: I loved this book when I was little and now my son loves it too. I was amazed at the negative comments regarding this book because of the spanking. It doesn't give my son nightmares - it's just a story and if anything it helps him realize that those noises he hears at night have reasonable explanations. I don't spank him - he equates that part with a time out but he does understand about spanking (there are many who still believe in spanking). A lot of literature has things that some consider undesirable - as a parent you don't hide those things but enjoy the art and explain anything that might be confusing to the child.
Customer Rating: Summary: 2nd generation loves Francis too! Comment: I loved this book so much as a child that I (shame, shame) did not return it to the library! My old, stolen copy is almost falling apart so it was time to get another. I love the old illustrations. They are not bright and colorful but my daugther still enjoys them. As an adult raised on spankings as my primary form of punishment, I don't plan on handing that down to my daughter. I don't, however, have any problem with the spanking reference in this book. It is during a really cute dialog between Francis and her father and I enjoy her logical humor. I also don't have a problem with this book showing a child a lot of excuses to get out of bed. Kid's can think those up without ever being exposed to this book. In my opinion it shows how children who aren't tired, can let their imagination run wild then realize there is nothing to be afraid of. Don't be afraid of this wonderful and timeless book. Buy it with "Bread and Jam for Francis."
